Motorised curtains & blinds FAQ
Can you motorise an existing blind?
Often, yes. Many roller blinds can be retrofitted by replacing the chain mechanism with a compatible motor, subject to the tube, blind size, fabric weight and condition. We inspect the existing blind before recommending a retrofit.
Do motorised blinds need an electrician?
Rechargeable battery motors usually avoid new wiring. Hardwired systems require an electrician and are best planned early in a renovation or new build. We provide the motor and power requirements and coordinate with your electrician where needed.
Can I control them from my phone or by voice?
Yes, when the selected motors are paired with a compatible hub. Depending on the platform, control can include phone and tablet apps, Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home or Siri, schedules, scenes and remote access.
Will they work with my home automation system?
Usually, but the correct motor and interface need to be selected before manufacture. Somfy is our strongest option for premium integrated projects, with pathways for systems such as Control4, Crestron and KNX. Alpha and Rollease Acmeda also support compatible smart-home and building-control integrations.
What happens if the power goes out?
Rechargeable systems continue to operate from their battery. Some curtain motors also support a manual pull or soft-touch/manual override function. The exact fallback depends on the motor selected, so we specify this where it is important.
Are motorised curtains and blinds noisy?
Modern motors can be very quiet, but noise varies by motor, speed, blind size, track and installation. For bedrooms, media rooms and premium projects we prioritise quiet-drive options and careful installation.
Which brand should I choose?
Somfy is the premium choice for deeper whole-home integration and demanding projects. Alpha is an excellent value option for uncomplicated control. Rollease Acmeda is strong where quiet hardware, wire-free retrofit and live system feedback matter. We will recommend the best fit rather than defaulting to the most expensive option.
How long is the warranty?
It depends on the exact motor and accessory. Current manufacturer terms range from one year on some hubs and accessories to five or seven years on selected motors. We list the applicable warranty in your proposal so there is no ambiguity.
How much do motorised curtains and blinds cost?
The cost depends on the window size, treatment, fabric, motor torque, power type, number of channels and whether a smart hub or broader integration is included. A free in-home measure is the fastest way to produce an accurate, itemised quote.
